U-706 was a Type VIIC submarine built for the Kriegsmarine. H. C. Stülcken Sohn, Hamburg laid her keel on 22 November 1940. She entered service on 16 March 1942, having been launched on 24 November 1941.

612 ships of the class were built. The class followed the Type UB III, Vetehinen class and was succeeded by the Type XXI (Late-war replacement).
