I-1 was a J1 type submarine. Her keel was laid at Kawasaki, Kobe, Japan on 12 March 1923. Launched on 15 October 1924, she entered service on 10 March 1926.
The Type J1M submarine followed.
The boat displaced 2,135 long tons surfaced and 2,791 long tons submerged. She measured 97.5 m (320 ft) long with a beam of 9.1 m (30 ft). She carried a complement of 68.
Her main battery was two 140 mm (5.5 in) guns.
She was in commission for 1,308 days of the Second World War. She was decommissioned on 5 November 1929. She recommissioned on 15 November 1930. She was struck from the register on 1 April 1943.
She was wrecked on 29 January 1943, at 21°20′S 108°45′E.
