I-22 was a Type C submarine in service with the Imperial Japanese Navy. She carried the pennant number 1938. Kawasaki Shipbuilding, Kobe, Japan laid her keel on 25 November 1937. Launched on 23 December 1938, she entered service on 10 March 1941.

The class followed the Junsen Type B and was succeeded by the Type D / Sen'yu-Dai Type.

The boat displaced 2,554 long tons surfaced and 3,561 long tons submerged. She measured 109.3 m (359 ft) long with a beam of 9.1 m (30 ft). Her designed speed was 23.5 knots.

Her main battery was one 140 mm (5.5 in) guns. Her machinery developed 12,400 bhp.

She was in commission for 645 days of the Second World War. She was struck from the register on 15 December 1942.

She was sunk on 6 October 1942, at 11°22′S 162°20′E. The wreck survives.
