Surcouf was a submarine in service with the Marine Nationale. She carried the pennant number N-3. The ship was named after Robert Surcouf. Her keel was laid at Cherbourg Arsenal on 1 July 1927. Launched on 18 November 1929, she entered service on 16 April 1934.
The boat displaced 3,250 long tons surfaced and 4,304 long tons submerged. She measured 110 m (361 ft) long with a beam of 9 m (30 ft). Her designed speed was 18.5 knots, and she carried a complement of 118.
Her main battery was two 203 mm (8.0 in) guns. She carried one aircraft. Her machinery developed 7,600 hp.
