U-1197 was a Type VIIC submarine in service with the Kriegsmarine. Her keel was laid at F Schichau GmbH, Danzig on 13 March 1943. Launched on 30 September 1943, she entered service on 2 December 1943.

612 ships of the class were built. The class followed the Type UB III, Vetehinen class and was succeeded by the Type XXI (Late-war replacement).
