U-262 was a Type VIIC submarine in service with the Kriegsmarine. Her keel was laid at Bremer Vulkan, Bremen-Vegesack on 29 May 1941. Launched on 10 March 1942, she entered service on 15 April 1942.
612 ships of the class were built. The class followed the Type UB III, Vetehinen class and was succeeded by the Type XXI (Late-war replacement).
