U-65 was a Type IXB submarine, operated by the Kriegsmarine. She carried the pennant number 1939. AG Weser, Bremen laid her keel on 6 December 1938. She entered service on 15 February 1940, having been launched on 6 November 1939.

Her class ran to 14 ships. The class followed the Type IXA submarine and was succeeded by the Type IXC submarine.
