U-89 was a Type VIIC submarine of the Kriegsmarine. She carried the pennant number 1941. Her keel was laid at Flender Werke, Lübeck on 20 August 1940. Launched on 20 September 1941, she entered service on 19 November 1941.

612 ships of the class were built. The class followed the Type UB III, Vetehinen class and was succeeded by the Type XXI (Late-war replacement).
