Ashigara was a Myōkō-class cruiser built for the Imperial Japanese Navy. The ship was named after Mount Ashigara. Her keel was laid at Kawasaki Shipyards, Kobe, Japan on 11 April 1925. Launched on 22 April 1928, she entered service on 20 August 1929.
Four ships of the class were built. The class followed the Aoba-class cruiser and was succeeded by the Takao-class cruiser.
Displacement was 13,000 long tons. She measured 203.8 m (669 ft) long with a beam of 19 m (62 ft). Her designed speed was 35.5 knots, and she carried a complement of 920.
Her main battery was ten 200 mm (7.9 in) guns. She carried three aircraft.
She was in commission for 2,107 days of the Second World War.
She was sunk on 8 June 1945, at 1°59′S 104°56′E. The wreck survives.
