Kinugasa was a Aoba-class cruiser heavy cruiser of the Imperial Japanese Navy. She was named for Mount Kinugasa. Her keel was laid at Kawasaki Heavy Industries on 24 October 1924. She entered service on 30 September 1927, having been launched on 24 October 1926.

Two ships of the class were built. The class followed the Furutaka-class cruiser and was succeeded by the Myōkō-class cruiser.

Displacement was 8,300 long tons. She measured 185.2 m (608 ft) long with a beam of 15.8 m (52 ft). Her designed speed was 36 knots, and she carried a complement of 643.

Her main battery was six 201 mm (7.9 in) guns. Her belt armour was 76 mm (3.0 in) and her deck 36 mm. She carried one aircraft. Her machinery developed 102,000 shp.

She was in commission for 1,201 days of the Second World War. She was struck from the register on 15 December 1942.

She was sunk on 13 November 1942 by aircraft, at 8°45′S 157°00′E. The wreck survives.
