Takanami was a Yūgumo-class destroyer, operated by the Imperial Japanese Navy. She carried the pennant number 1942. Her keel was laid at Uraga Dock Company on 29 May 1941. She was launched on 16 March 1942.

19 ships of the class were built. The class followed the Kagerō-class destroyer and was succeeded by the Akizuki-class destroyer (1942).

Displacement was 2,520 long tons. She measured 119.2 m (391 ft) long with a beam of 10.8 m (35 ft). Her designed speed was 35 knots, and she carried a complement of 228.

Her main battery was six 127 mm (5 in) guns.

She was in commission for 1,210 days of the Second World War. She was struck from the register on 24 December 1942.
