Yamakaze was a Shiratsuyu-class destroyer of the Imperial Japanese Navy. She carried the pennant number 1936. Her keel was laid at Uraga Dock Company on 25 May 1935. She entered service on 30 June 1937, having been launched on 21 February 1936.
Ten ships of the class were built. The class followed the Hatsuharu-class destroyer and was succeeded by the Asashio-class destroyer.
She displaced 1,685 long tons. She measured 107.5 m (353 ft) long with a beam of 9.9 m (32 ft). Her designed speed was 34 knots, and she carried a complement of 226.
Her main battery was five 127 mm (5 in) guns.
She was in commission for 1,084 days of the Second World War. She was struck from the register on 20 August 1942.
She was sunk on 25 June 1942, at 34°34′N 140°26′E. The wreck survives.
