I-6 was a J2 type submarine. Kawasaki Shipbuilding Corporation, Kobe, Japan laid her keel on 14 October 1932. She entered service on 15 May 1935, having been launched on 31 March 1934.
The boat displaced 1,900 long tons surfaced and 3,061 long tons submerged. She measured 98.5 m (323 ft) long with a beam of 9.1 m (30 ft). Her designed speed was 20 knots, and she carried a complement of 80.
Her main battery was one 127 mm (5 in) guns. She carried one aircraft.
She was in commission for 1,836 days of the Second World War. She was decommissioned on 15 December 1938. She recommissioned on 1 April 1939. She was struck from the register on 10 September 1944.
She was sunk on 16 June 1944, at 19°00′N 165°00′W. The wreck survives.
