Named for the state of Arizona, admitted to the Union on 14 February 1912. The term was probably coined by melding the words "arid" and "zone," to designate the dry area in the southwestern United States at the time of the state's being admitted to the Union. Some authorities maintain that the name was derived from the Aztec Native American word Arizuma, which can be translated as "silver bearing".
