U-164 was a Type IXC submarine in service with the Kriegsmarine. She carried the pennant number 1941. Her keel was laid at DeSchiMAG, Bremen on 20 June 1940. She entered service on 28 November 1941, having been launched on 1 May 1941.

142 ships of the class were built. The class followed the Type I and was succeeded by the Type XXI.
