U-167 was a Type IXC/40 submarine, operated by the Kriegsmarine. She carried the pennant number 1942. Her keel was laid at DeSchiMAG, Bremen on 12 March 1941. Launched on 5 March 1942, she entered service on 4 July 1942.

She was one of 142 ships of her class. The class followed the Type I and was succeeded by the Type XXI.
