U-174 was a Type IXC submarine built for the Kriegsmarine. DeSchiMAG AG Weser, Bremen laid her keel on 2 January 1941. She entered service on 26 November 1941, having been launched on 21 August 1941.

Her class ran to 142 ships. The class followed the Type I and was succeeded by the Type XXI.

The boat displaced 1,102 long tons surfaced and 1,213 long tons submerged. She measured 76.8 m (252 ft) long with a beam of 6.8 m (22 ft). Her designed speed was 18.3 knots, and she carried a complement of 48.

Her main battery was one 105 mm (4.1 in) guns.

She was in commission for 517 days of the Second World War.

She was sunk on 27 April 1943, at 43°35′N 56°18′W. The wreck survives.
