U-522 was a Type IXC submarine, operated by the Kriegsmarine. Her keel was laid at Deutsche Werft, Hamburg on 9 July 1941. She entered service on 11 June 1942, having been launched on 1 April 1942.

142 ships of the class were built. The class followed the Type I and was succeeded by the Type XXI.
