U-523 was a Type IXC submarine of the Kriegsmarine. Deutsche Werft, Hamburg laid her keel on 4 August 1941. She entered service on 25 June 1942, having been launched on 15 April 1942.

She was one of 142 ships of her class. The class followed the Type I and was succeeded by the Type XXI.

The boat displaced 1,102 long tons surfaced and 1,213 long tons submerged. She measured 76.8 m (252 ft) long with a beam of 6.8 m (22 ft). Her designed speed was 18.3 knots, and she carried a complement of 48.
