Atago was a Takao-class cruiser in service with the Imperial Japanese Navy. She was named for Mount Atago. Her keel was laid at Kure Naval Arsenal on 28 April 1927. She entered service on 30 March 1932, having been launched on 16 June 1930.

Four ships of the class were built. The class followed the Myōkō-class cruiser and was succeeded by the Mogami-class cruiser.

She displaced 9,850 long tons standard and 14,616 long tons at full load. She measured 203.8 m (669 ft) long with a beam of 20.4 m (67 ft). Her designed speed was 35.5 knots, and she carried a complement of 773.

Her main battery was ten 200 mm (7.9 in) guns. She carried three aircraft. Her machinery developed 133,100 shp.

She was in commission for 1,879 days of the Second World War.

She was sunk on 23 October 1944 by torpedo, at 9°28′N 117°17′E. The wreck survives.
