Chōkai was a Takao-class cruiser in service with the Imperial Japanese Navy. She was named for Mount Chōkai. Mitsubishi laid her keel on 26 March 1928. She entered service on 30 June 1932, having been launched on 5 April 1931.

Her class ran to four ships. The class followed the Myōkō-class cruiser and was succeeded by the Mogami-class cruiser.

Displacement was 15,781 long tons. She measured 203.8 m (669 ft) long with a beam of 19 m (62 ft). Her designed speed was 35.5 knots, and she carried a complement of 773. Her main battery was of 200 mm (7.9 in) calibre.

Her belt armour was 102 mm (4.0 in) and her deck 35 mm. She carried two aircraft.

She was in commission for 1,937 days of the Second World War. She was struck from the register on 20 December 1944.

She was scuttled on 25 October 1944, at 11°22′N 126°22′E. The wreck survives.
