HMS Riou was a frigate of the Buckley-class destroyer escort, operated by the United States Navy. Her keel was laid at Bethlehem-Hingham Shipyard, Hingham, Massachusetts on 4 August 1943. She entered service on 14 December 1943, having been launched on 23 October 1943.

98 ships of the class were built. The class followed the Evarts-class destroyer escort and was succeeded by the Cannon-class destroyer escort.

Displacement was 1,400 long tons. She measured 93.3 m (306 ft) long with a beam of 11.2 m (37 ft). Her designed speed was 24 knots, and she carried a complement of 186.
