I-40 was a Type B2 submarine, operated by the Imperial Japanese Navy. Kure Naval Arsenal laid her keel on 18 March 1942. Launched on 10 November 1942, she entered service on 31 July 1943.
The class followed the Junsen Type A and was succeeded by the Junsen Type C.
The boat displaced 2,624 long tons surfaced and 3,700 long tons submerged. She measured 108.7 m (356 ft) long with a beam of 9.3 m (31 ft). Her designed speed was 23.5 knots, and she carried a complement of 114.
Her main battery was one 140 mm (5.5 in) guns.
