I-42 was a Type B2 submarine, operated by the Imperial Japanese Navy. Her keel was laid at Kure Naval Arsenal on 18 March 1942. She entered service on 3 November 1943, having been launched on 10 November 1942.

The class followed the Junsen Type A and was succeeded by the Junsen Type C.

The boat displaced 2,624 long tons surfaced and 3,700 long tons submerged. She measured 108.7 m (356 ft) long with a beam of 9.3 m (31 ft). Her designed speed was 23.5 knots, and she carried a complement of 114.

Her main battery was one 140 mm (5.5 in) guns.

She was in commission for 177 days of the Second World War. She was struck from the register on 30 April 1944.

She was sunk on 23 March 1944, at 6°40′N 134°03′E. The wreck survives.
