I-44 was a Type B2 submarine built for the Imperial Japanese Navy. Her keel was laid at Yokosuka Naval Arsenal, Yokosuka, Japan on 11 June 1942. Launched on 5 March 1943, she entered service on 31 January 1944.
The class followed the Junsen Type A and was succeeded by the Junsen Type C.
The boat displaced 2,624 long tons surfaced and 3,700 long tons submerged. She measured 108.7 m (356 ft) long with a beam of 9.3 m (31 ft). Her designed speed was 23.5 knots, and she carried a complement of 114.
Her main battery was one 140 mm (5.5 in) guns. She carried one aircraft.
She was in commission for 499 days of the Second World War. She was struck from the register on 10 June 1945.
She was sunk on 4 April 1945, at 27°02′N 151°00′E. The wreck survives.
