K-56 was a Soviet K-class submarine. She carried the pennant number 1940. Her keel was laid at Zavod No. 189 on 17 October 1937. She entered service on 25 November 1942, having been launched on 29 December 1940.

Her class ran to 15 ships. The class followed the Soviet S-class submarine and was succeeded by the Zulu-class submarine.

The boat displaced 1,466 long tons surfaced and 2,071 long tons submerged. She measured 97.7 m (321 ft) long with a beam of 7.4 m (24 ft). Her designed speed was 21 knots, and she carried a complement of 66.
