U-139 was a Type IID coastal submarine in service with the Kriegsmarine. She carried the pennant number 1940. Deutsche Werke, Kiel laid her keel on 20 November 1939. Launched on 28 June 1940, she entered service on 24 July 1940.
She was one of 50 ships of her class. The class followed the CV 707-type submarine and was succeeded by the Planned:.
