U-147 was a Type IID coastal submarine built for the Kriegsmarine. She carried the pennant number 1940. Deutsche Werke, Kiel laid her keel on 10 April 1940. Launched on 16 November 1940, she entered service on 11 December 1940.

She was one of 50 ships of her class. The class followed the CV 707-type submarine and was succeeded by the Planned:.
