U-149 was a Type IID coastal submarine of the Kriegsmarine. She carried the pennant number 1940. Her keel was laid at Deutsche Werke, Kiel on 25 May 1940. She entered service on 13 November 1940, having been launched on 19 October 1940.
She was one of 50 ships of her class. The class followed the CV 707-type submarine and was succeeded by the Planned:.
