USS Fargo was a cruiser of the Independence-class aircraft carrier in service with the United States Navy. She carried the pennant number CL-85. She was named for USS Langley. New York Shipbuilding Corporation laid her keel on 11 April 1942. Launched on 22 May 1943, she entered service on 31 August 1943.

20 ships of the class were built. The Saipan-class aircraft carrier followed.

She displaced 11,000 long tons. She measured 189.7 m (623 ft) long with a beam of 21.8 m (71 ft). Her designed speed was 31 knots, and she carried a complement of 1,569.

Her main battery was 26 40 mm (1.6 in) guns. She carried 45 aircraft.

She served with the United States Navy as Fargo (CL-85) 9 September 1942 until 11 February 1947. She then passed to the Marine Nationale, serving as La Fayette from 2 June 1951. She was in commission for 736 days of the Second World War. She was decommissioned on 11 February 1947. She was struck from the register on 20 March 1963.

She was broken up for scrap on 20 March 1963.
