USS Southerland was a Gearing-class destroyer of the United States Navy. She was named for William Henry Hudson Southerland. Bath Iron Works, Bath, Maine laid her keel on 27 May 1944. Launched on 5 October 1944, she entered service on 22 December 1944.

Her class ran to 55 ships. The class followed the Allen M. Sumner-class destroyer and was succeeded by the Norfolk class.

Displacement was 2,425 long tons. She measured 118.9 m (390 ft) long with a beam of 12.5 m (41 ft). Her designed speed was 34.5 knots, and she carried a complement of 367.

Her main battery was six 127 mm (5 in) guns.

She was in commission for 254 days of the Second World War. She was decommissioned on 26 February 1981. She was struck from the register on 23 February 1981.

She was expended as a target on 2 August 1997. The wreck survives.
