U-5 was a Type IIA coastal submarine of the Kriegsmarine. She carried the pennant number 1935. Her keel was laid at Deutsche Werke, Kiel on 11 February 1935. Launched on 14 August 1935, she entered service on 31 August 1935.
Her class ran to 50 ships. The class followed the CV 707-type submarine and was succeeded by the Planned:.
The boat displaced 250 long tons surfaced and 298 long tons submerged. She measured 40.9 m (134 ft) long with a beam of 4.1 m (13 ft). Her designed speed was 13 knots, and she carried a complement of 25.
Her main battery was one 20 mm (0.8 in) guns.
She was in commission for 1,295 days of the Second World War.
She was sunk on 19 March 1943 by accident, at 54°40′N 19°45′E. The wreck survives.
