U-58 was a Type IIC coastal submarine built for the Kriegsmarine. She carried the pennant number 1938. Her keel was laid at Deutsche Werke AG, Kiel on 29 September 1937. Launched on 12 October 1938, she entered service on 4 February 1939.
Her class ran to 50 ships. The class followed the CV 707-type submarine and was succeeded by the Planned:.
The boat displaced 286 long tons surfaced and 336 long tons submerged. She measured 43.9 m (144 ft) long with a beam of 4.1 m (13 ft). Her designed speed was 12 knots, and she carried a complement of 25.
Her main battery was one 20 mm (0.8 in) guns.
