U-61 was a Type IIC coastal submarine built for the Kriegsmarine. She carried the pennant number 1939. Her keel was laid at Deutsche Werke AG, Kiel on 1 October 1938. She entered service on 12 August 1939, having been launched on 15 June 1939.

She was one of 50 ships of her class. The class followed the CV 707-type submarine and was succeeded by the Planned:.
