Velite was a Soldati-class destroyer built for the Regia Marina. O.T.O., Livorno laid her keel on 19 April 1941. She was launched on 31 August 1941.

Her class ran to 17 ships. The class followed the Oriani-class destroyer and was succeeded by the Comandanti Medaglie d'Oro-class destroyer.

She displaced 1,850 long tons standard and 2,550 long tons at full load. She measured 106.7 m (350 ft) long with a beam of 10.2 m (33 ft). Her designed speed was 33 knots, and she carried a complement of 206.

Her main battery was four 120 mm (4.7 in) guns in two twin mountings. Her machinery developed 44,000 shp through two shafts.
