I-30 was a Type B1 submarine. Her keel was laid at Kure Naval Arsenal on 7 June 1939. She was launched on 17 September 1940.
The class followed the Type J3 submarine and was succeeded by the Type B2 submarine.
The boat displaced 2,584 long tons surfaced and 3,654 long tons submerged. She measured 108.9 m (357 ft) long with a beam of 9.3 m (31 ft). Her designed speed was 23.5 knots, and she carried a complement of 94.
Her main battery was one 140 mm (5.5 in) guns. She carried one aircraft.
She was broken up for scrap on 13 October 1942.
