I-36 was a Type B1 submarine in service with the Imperial Japanese Navy. Yokosuka Navy Yard, Yokosuka, Japan laid her keel on 4 December 1940. She entered service on 30 September 1942, having been launched on 1 November 1941.
The class followed the Type J3 submarine and was succeeded by the Type B2 submarine.
The boat displaced 2,584 long tons surfaced and 3,654 long tons submerged. She measured 108.7 m (357 ft) long with a beam of 9.3 m (31 ft). Her designed speed was 23.5 knots, and she carried a complement of 94.
Her main battery was one 140 mm (5.5 in) guns. She carried one aircraft.
She was in commission for 1,070 days of the Second World War.
She was scuttled in September 1945, at 14°00′N 177°30′W. The wreck survives.
