I-34 was a Type B1 submarine built for the Imperial Japanese Navy. Sasebo Naval Arsenal laid her keel on 1 January 1941. She entered service on 31 August 1942, having been launched on 24 September 1941.

The class followed the Type J3 submarine and was succeeded by the Type B2 submarine.

She measured 108.7 m (357 ft) long with a beam of 9.3 m (31 ft). Her designed speed was 23.5 knots, and she carried a complement of 101.

Her main battery was six 533 mm (21.0 in) guns.

She was in commission for 518 days of the Second World War. She was struck from the register in January 1944.

She was sunk on 13 November 1943, at 5°17′N 100°05′E. The wreck survives.
