HMS Ascension was a Colony-class frigate/Tacoma-class frigate in service with the United States Navy. She carried the pennant number PG-182. The ship was named after William Hargood. Walsh-Kaiser Company, Providence, Rhode Island laid her keel on 30 April 1943. She entered service on 24 November 1943, having been launched on 6 August 1943.

She was one of 45 ships of her class.

She displaced 1,264 long tons. She measured 92.3 m (303 ft) long with a beam of 11.3 m (37 ft). Her designed speed was 20 knots, and she carried a complement of 190. Her main battery was of 76 mm (3.0 in) calibre.
