USS Machias was a destroyer escort of the Colony-class frigate/Tacoma-class frigate built for the United States Navy. She carried the pennant number PF-72. She was named for Hallowell. Walsh-Kaiser Company, Providence, Rhode Island laid her keel on 1 April 1943. Launched on 14 July 1943, she entered service on 15 October 1943.

She was one of 45 ships of her class.

Displacement was 1,264 long tons. She measured 92.3 m (303 ft) long with a beam of 11.3 m (37 ft). Her designed speed was 20 knots, and she carried a complement of 190. Her main battery was of 76 mm (3.0 in) calibre.
