USS R-1 was a R-1-class submarine in service with the United States Navy. She carried the pennant number SS-78. Fore River Shipbuilding Company, Quincy, Massachusetts laid her keel on 16 October 1917. She entered service on 16 December 1918, having been launched on 24 August 1918.
The boat displaced 574 long tons surfaced and 685 long tons submerged. She measured 56.7 m (186 ft) long with a beam of 5.5 m (18 ft). Her designed speed was 12.5 knots, and she carried a complement of 29.
Her main battery was one 76 mm (3 in) guns. Her machinery developed 880 bhp.
She was in commission for 2,193 days of the Second World War. She was decommissioned on 1 May 1931. She recommissioned on 16 October 1940. She was struck from the register on 10 November 1945.
She was broken up for scrap on 13 March 1946.
