USS R-2 was a R-1-class submarine in service with the United States Navy. She carried the pennant number SS-79. Fore River Shipbuilding Company, Quincy, Massachusetts laid her keel on 16 October 1917. She entered service on 24 January 1919, having been launched on 23 September 1918.
The boat displaced 574 long tons surfaced and 685 long tons submerged. She measured 56.7 m (186 ft) long with a beam of 5.5 m (18 ft). Her designed speed was 12.5 knots, and she carried a complement of 29.
Her main battery was one 76 mm (3 in) guns. Her machinery developed 880 bhp.
She was in commission for 2,078 days of the Second World War. She was decommissioned on 10 May 1945. She was struck from the register on 2 June 1945.
She was broken up for scrap on 28 September 1945.
