USS R-9 was a R-1-class submarine of the United States Navy. She carried the pennant number SS-86. Fore River Shipbuilding Company, Quincy, Massachusetts laid her keel on 6 March 1918. She entered service on 30 July 1919, having been launched on 24 May 1919.

The boat displaced 574 long tons surfaced and 685 long tons submerged. She measured 56.7 m (186 ft) long with a beam of 5.5 m (18 ft). Her designed speed was 12.5 knots, and she carried a complement of 29.

Her main battery was one 76 mm (3 in) guns. Her machinery developed 880 bhp.

She was in commission for 2,193 days of the Second World War. She was decommissioned on 2 May 1931. She recommissioned on 14 March 1941. She was struck from the register on 11 October 1945.

She was broken up for scrap in February 1946.
