USS R-20 was a R-1-class submarine in service with the United States Navy. She carried the pennant number SS-97. Her keel was laid at Union Iron Works, San Francisco, California on 4 June 1917. Launched on 21 January 1918, she entered service on 26 October 1918.
The boat displaced 574 long tons surfaced and 685 long tons submerged. She measured 56.7 m (186 ft) long with a beam of 5.5 m (18 ft). Her designed speed was 12.5 knots, and she carried a complement of 29.
Her main battery was one 76 mm (3 in) guns. Her machinery developed 880 bhp.
She was in commission for 2,193 days of the Second World War. She was decommissioned on 15 May 1931. She recommissioned on 22 January 1941. She was struck from the register on 11 October 1945.
She was broken up for scrap on 13 March 1946.
